For local businesses, your Google Business Profile is your homepage
Many customers decide whether to contact a local business without ever visiting its website. Here is what that means for where you spend effort.
If you run a local or mobile service, there is a good chance a meaningful share of your customers form their entire impression of your business without visiting your website at all.
They search, they see a map with three results, they glance at the reviews, they check whether you cover their area, and they tap call. Your website was never involved.
What this changes
It does not make the website irrelevant. It is still where considered buyers go, and it is still what supports your search presence generally. But it does mean that effort spent on your Google Business Profile is often the highest-return work available to a local business, and it is routinely neglected.

The parts that actually move
- Categories: the primary category has an outsized effect on which searches you appear in.
- Service area: for mobile businesses, define it accurately rather than optimistically.
- Hours: including the ones you actually answer, not the ones on the door.
- Photos: recent, real, and of the work rather than the logo.
- Services and descriptions: use the words customers search, not internal terminology.
- Reviews: volume, recency, and whether you reply.
Reviews are the part most businesses under-invest in
Review count and recency influence both how you rank locally and whether someone taps your listing rather than the one above it. Yet most businesses ask for reviews inconsistently, or not at all.
The reason is rarely reluctance. It is that asking is a task with no owner and no trigger, so it happens when someone remembers, which is to say occasionally.
A practical sequence
- Fix the profile fundamentals, categories, service area, hours, services.
- Add real, recent photographs of actual work.
- Make asking for a review part of the job finishing, with a trigger rather than a reminder.
- Reply to reviews, including the critical ones. Prospects read the replies.
- Only then worry about broader organic rankings.
It is an unfashionable order. For businesses that serve an area rather than a market, it is usually the right one.
